Whatever Retirement Means to You, We Help You Retire Well.

Our mission is intentionally simple - help people to “retire well.”

Retirement is risky. You face major decisions, you probably have the most money you have ever had, and you therefore face the most risk you ever will; we understand and respect that risk. We offer detailed, personal, and nuanced advice with a caring atmosphere -

We help you optimize your financial plans for retirement so you can sleep at night, reap tax benefits, and leave more to the people and causes you care about.

Most Advisors help save money, we help you spend it.

Part of retiring is understanding how to convert the assets you own into an income stream you can spend. We plan out your drawdown strategy to ensure you're going to have a reliable income stream with a lifetime of tax-efficiency. We also consult on exactly when you should start your Canada Pension Plan (CPP) and Old Age Security (OAS), and how to manage the variability of income you'll need throughout retirement.

We run a digitally enabled practice.

While we do love seeing our clients face-to-face, we also appreciate the convenience, efficiency, and accuracy that technology can provide. So whether it's hosting an online meeting, a digital onboarding in lieu of paper forms, or using financial planning software with meaningful visualizations (instead of a 50 page report, bleh!) we strive to provide you with the best experience and clearest understanding of your present standing and future options.

We strive to exceed your expectations every day.

Our efforts will be focused on helping you achieve your objectives, but our ultimate goal is for you to surpass them. After all, you’re investing time, money and energy into working with us, and we want to make sure you’re getting maximum value out of our relationship. Throughout our time together, we’ll be constantly looking for new ways to get you closer to where you want to be.

Integrated Wealth Management and Financial Planning to Help Connect the Dots.

Based on your goals, values, and needs, we help you design your future. We work together with you to provide the necessary tools, perspectives, and strategies to succeed. We specialize in providing wealth advice, financial planning services, tax reduction strategies, and estate planning for those seeking financial freedom and security.

We remove stress, add clarity, build confidence, and create security. We design financial strategies that give retirees more freedom, more flexibility, and more control throughout their retirement.

You want to retire, but you're not sure you're ready or can afford to.

Retirement Planning
Our speciality is retirement income planning.  We'll help you understand what's possible, how ready you are (or will be) and how to get the most from your resources throughout your retirement.

You want to make sure your money goes to the right people and causes when you pass.

Estate Planning / Philanthropic Planning
We take the time to build an estate plan that is tax and probate efficient, while ensuring a smooth process for your executor and beneficiaries.  We work with your lawyer or recommend a few to implement the strategies into your legal documents.

You’ve recently started your own business and want to make sure you’re staying ahead of any future tax liabilities.

Tax Planning
We work with approximately 40 tax saving opportunities in our strategic tax planning approach, which keeps your numbers in order so no detail falls through the cracks.

You need some hands-on guidance on which investment strategies are right for you.

Investment Management
Our 3rd party asset managers run a variety of strategies to accommodate most investors needs and comfort levels, with a tilt towards safety and capital preservation.

Whether you’re five years away from retirement or 20 years away from retirement, we’ll help guide you through the steps necessary to secure enough assets for your optimal retirement lifestyle. After evaluating your current financial situation, we’ll identify the income sources and opportunities that are most advantageous for you as you prepare for your life post-employment.

We follow a 6-step financial planning process:

  1. Define the Terms of the Engagement
  2. Determine the Client's Goals, Needs and Priorities
  3. Analyze the Information with Respect to the Client's Goals, Needs and Priorities
  4. Develop and Present the Financial Plan and Strategies
  5. Agree on Implementation Action, Responsibilities and Time Frames
  6. Agree on Responsibilities and Time Frames for the Review and Re-evaluation of the Financial Plan

During each of the steps in the financial planning process, the 5 pillars of financial planning are always considered in order to ensure a comprehensive approach:

  1. Income planning
  2. Insurance
  3. Investments
  4. Tax planning
  5. Estate planning

Ethics: We hold ourselves to the highest ethical standards. As CFP Professionals we must abide by the code of ethics set out by FP Canada.

When it comes to leaving your money to the next generation, decisions become emotional, and we know that emotions don't help make good financial decisions.  We can help you be strategic in leaving money to the people and causes that you care about most in a way that respects your goals, wishes, and privacy.

At the end of the day money is for spending.  You'll spend it, or someone else will, but through effective estate planning you can enjoy some control over what will happen with your resources when you're gone.

Leave more to your family without impacting your retirement.

We get everything organized so when it's time to visit the lawyer all of your ducks are already in a row.  This can make the whole process much less stressful.  We can work with your existing lawyer, or we have several competent estate lawyers that we can refer you to by request.

We enjoy helping clients strategically leave money to their favourite causes.

Many of us have an interest in charity, but fear that leaving a large sum to charity will negatively impact our kids.  There are a number of key strategies that can help you achieve your goals.

  • Donate securities with deferred capital gains in-kind, and donate the tax consequences away too.
  • Leave the charity as a beneficiary on an insurance policy, to protect your privacy.
  • Gift a life insurance policy now and continue to pay the premiums.
  • Use products with a named beneficiary to alleviate privacy concerns.
  • Use a trust to maintain control of how the money may be distributed after you're gone.

Please get in touch to talk further about how strategic you can be with your charitable wishes.

You don’t have a choice about paying taxes, but you can avoid making the mistake of overpaying them. While it’s hard to imagine anyone intentionally paying too much in taxes, we know that poor (or lack of) planning results in exactly that.

How much of that money is yours? Wouldn’t you rather see those funds in your bank account or put aside for your retirement or other financial goals?

Do you want to find out how you can reduce your tax burden?

You might be able to save on taxes by:

  • Restructuring your investment portfolio to produce a higher after-tax return
  • Shifting income to dependents in a lower tax bracket
  • Splitting income with your spouse
  • Claiming appropriate home office deductions
  • Maximizing registered investments like RRSPs and TFSAs
  • Identifying all the deductions that apply to you or your small business

If you’re like most people, your taxes represent one of your largest annual expenses (yes, even in retirement), yet often little or no planning is done to minimize your tax bill. Careful tax planning can free up money that you can use to achieve your goals.

We work with several top notch 3rd party asset management firms to provide you with a variety of professionally run portfolios suitable for nearly any investor.  We'll help you choose an asset manager that you're comfortable with, and we'll work closely with the manager to ensure your investment approach matches your financial plan.

When you work with us, we will:

Identify Your Short- and Long-Term Objectives
As these objectives change, we’ll strategically adjust our approach according to your goals and abilities.  We'll help you select the right asset manager for your needs.

Help Reduce Your Risk
While markets remain volatile, we can help you select a manager with a "safety first" approach.  Further, we can reduce the risk in your approach to finances outside of market returns, so when the market swings you'll know you're ok.

Follow a Timeline That’s Right For You
After outlining your objectives, we’ll design a strategy that aligns with your optimal timeline for achieving your goals.

Pairing world-class service with
down-to-earth conversations.

As a family business, we're literally staking our name on your success.

After completing my Bachelor of Commerce degree from University of Toronto I knew I wanted to run a business of my own.  At the time I was running a wedding photography business, but I knew that industry wasn't the right choice for me in the long-term. Ultimately I decided to join my father in Financial Planning, earning my Certified Financial Planner® Professional and Registered Retirement Coordinator® designations, and purchased his business in 2019.

I enjoy finding better ways to serve our clients.  I've embraced technology (something this industry is guilty of avoiding) in order to make my practice fully digitally enabled.  I like getting together with my clients as much as anyone, but I also realize the value and convenience of being able to host online meetings, bring on new clients with a digital process, and use web-based financial planning tools that allow more robust understanding of financial planning decisions with meaningful visualizations instead of endless numbers.

Outside of work, I am married to Jennifer, have two young sons, Owen and Dax, and enjoy mountain and road cycling, keeping exotic discus fish, and vacationing (although COVID-19 has really put a damper on that).

Learn More About Me

If you had a million dollars to spend, what would be the first three things you would buy?
I would buy a vacation property, do some renovations to my home, and probably buy a boat since I live near Lake Ontario.

What’s the most likely place people could find you on a Saturday night?
With two active young sons, I'll be putting them to bed and finding a moment to relax and clear my head, likely with a glass of wine and my wife's company.

Which would you pick: Living on the beach or living near the mountains?
I'm an avid cyclist, both mountain biking and road biking (and winter riding), so mountains.

Imagine being approached by a genie who offers you three wishes. What might those wishes be?
I’d wish for a rocket-fast metabolism, an amazing memory and perfect health.

If you had the ability to travel back in time, what’s something you would tell your 18-year-old self?
You're about to turn 19 and you serve tables in a restaurant, drink less than you want to and save the money instead.

Living on the beach!

With a background in social science and education communications, working in academia and in non-profit institutions, I specialize in making complex information clear and easy to find. I have always loved connecting with people through the written word, and enjoy all digital communication formats in particular.

Thanks to my two young boys, Owen and Dax, I don't find myself with a lot of free time these days! But I love spending time with my family outdoors, exploring new hiking trails and swimming spots. And as a voracious reader I can often be found with book in hand at the end of a long day.

Learn More About Me

If you had a million dollars to spend, what would be the first three things you would buy?
I would max out my kids' RESP contributions (and probably do the same for all my nieces and nephews), go on vacation somewhere (location TBD because COVID), and make a big donation to one of my favourite charities.

What’s the most likely place people could find you on a Saturday night?
At home (especially these days!) with a glass of wine and a good book (or a good board game!).

Which would you pick: Living on the beach or living near the mountains?
Beach! I like to swim and boat and dig in the sand with my kids.

Imagine being approached by a genie who offers you three wishes. What might those wishes be?
Health for my family, an instant ability to speak any language on earth, and a never-ending cheese supply in my fridge.

If you had the ability to travel back in time, what’s something you would tell your 18-year-old self?
Be brave! You're about to go on some amazing adventures and enjoy yourself!

Getting Started is Easy

We always begin with a phone call.

Our goal in this call is only to make an introduction and understand whether your needs match our process. Bring your questions, we'll have answers. If you prefer a Zoom meeting so we can be "face-to-face" then just select that option at the link below. There's no need to prepare for this call, but if you have something specific you want to discuss then feel free to have the necessary documents ready or a list of questions.

PF Canada suggests that you ask your Financial Planner 10 questions.  Here are our answers:
